iZem (the acronym of “in ze early morning”) is the alter ego of the French DJ, radio presenter, beat raconteur and producer Jérémie Moussaid Kerouanton. On his debut LP, the Lisbon-based French producer explores the sounds of Latin America and North Africa in a vivid, genre-defying soundscape. Inspired by cultural greats like Jack Kerouac, Tahar Ben Jelloun and Matisse, iZem spent time soaking up the atmosphere at Café Hafa, an idyllic cliff-top joint in Tangier, Morocco overlooking the strait of Gibraltar. Brimming with soulful exoticism, personal narratives and adventurous collaborators, Hafa is a vivid analogue-digital, genre-defying soundscape experiment drawing from the afro-centric sounds of his journey to-date, incorporating modern, soulful song writing and hybrid beats.
