Formed in 1971, Black Truth Rhythm Band, led by the charismatic Oluko Imo, set themselves apart by taking their influences from Africa at a time when most of their peers in the West Indies were looking to the funk of James Brown and the USA for inspiration. They fused rhythms from Africa & the West Indies with elements of jazz, funk, calypso and soul. At this time finding African records in the West Indies was particularly difficult, making the band’s choice of influences all the more rare.
